Swimming Crab Trials
The second batch of swimming crabs (Portunus sp.) was harvested at Laikang beginning in March. Overall the trial results were disappointing. Although growth of the crabs has been good, it is difficult to estimate survival because of the difficulty in harvesting crabs from the ponds. Several ponds were flooded or the dykes broken by spring tides or the wet season rains. Consequently, many crabs were lost. In response, BBAP Takalar have put netting around the ponds to retain the crabs. Some ponds still contain crabs and farmers will continue to harvest them until mid or late July.
Because of the hot dry conditions in South Sulawesi at present, water temperature and salinity in the ponds is high. Some farmers have come up with the idea of providing shelter for the crabs inside the ponds.
Tilapia Trials
Kanaungan
In Kanaungan, 19 farmers are currently trialling tilapia. Each pond received 3,000 – 5,000 tilapia seed, with a total of around 63,000 fingerlings. The group leader, Pak Majid, has already harvested about 500 kg from 5,000 seed. Two ponds have failed.
Bontolempangan
Another site where tilapia are being trialled is Bontolempangan in Maros Regency. There are 18 farmers who have joined the tilapia farmer group there, and their ponds were stocked around 21 June. The team from BBAP Takalar and Ibu Mardiana (UNHAS) will undertake group strengthening in early July.
